Well, it's a little over 1 month now, and things are going pretty well. I've only had to go off my nut at one guy so far, so things are good. This guy really is a moron. He comes down here from head-office, without arranging anything in advance. He figured it would be just like it was in head-office, which is fair enough. But he didn't check. A single phone call. The reason he didn't though was obvious - he doesn't now what he needs for his test.
He had me running around getting his data ready, with the pressure of "[he] was supposed to be running this test today, now I'm behind schedule". So I get everything he needs ready by 10am, which is quite impressive if you knew what I had to do.
Then I wander down to his office at about 4:55 and off-hand ask how things went today. He replies, "There you are! We haven't been able to do anything because data is missing."
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" I ask.
"I tried, but I couldn't find you."
I hadn't left the building, and I had been talking to another tester all day. This was lame.
"Well, I was in the building the whole time, I didn't vanish at any point."
"Well, I couldn't find you."
Please. Spare me the childish execuses.
I say, "What's the problem?" Missing data. Ok, so I fix it.
He then tries to run his test, and it fails: unable to get data for some point, and he says, "Ah, this data point must come from XYZ|?|.". XYZ is another system (not mine) and it hasn't been prepared for his test.
This guy has been working on this project for maybe a year, probably more, and only Tuesday at 5:30pm did he understand where his data was coming from. Good grief. So I relate my opinions to him:
"I can't believe you came down here not knowing where all your data comes from."
"Well, in
"Well, <someguy> isn't here."
"I know that, but I assumed that you were going to have the systems the same as in
"Mine are. Do you know the guy you need to contact to get the XYZ system ready?"
"No."
I shake my head, and repeat, "I can't believe you came down here not knowing where all your data comes from. It's now 5:30 and you going to try to get the XYZ data organised."
He brilliantly counters with, "Before you jump to conclusions, I don't work for [the company running the tests], I'm a contractor. All I was told was to contact <someguy> if I wanted to run a test."
What gets me, is this guy is taking zero responsibility for his project. He doesn't care how the data gets to him - which is fine, but now he is on site, and everybody has his or her own stuff to look after. This guy is holding the light bulb over his head, expected the world to revolve around him.
And again, on Thursday, he waits until 5:30 to tell me his data is missing. I really go at him:
"Why is it that you wait until 5:30 to tell me anything? If I hadn't asked, you'd never get anything done!"
"But the data should have been there."
What an imbecile. I walk out on him saying over my shoulder "It would have been nice to have known this 2 hours ago."
He calls after me, "Well, it would have been nice to have the data this morning!"
What an absolute moron. He tries to get even with me by highlighting the fact that he should he called 3 days earlier to get confirmation that his data would be there.
Well, after that, I was not in a good mood, and was not going to go to the dinner we had planned, but changed my mind at the last minute. Good thing too..... :)
This is a picture my buddy Jonathan took with his Palm Pix (palm pilot camera snapon) I think it shows a fair amount of "get-me-out-of-here"ness on my face....
