SCADA: Supervisory Control And Data Aquisition. Basically, its a system that allows you to control a pipeline from a single control room somewehere. Data Aquisition means "getting the data from the field and displaying it in a usefull way on the screen". Supervisory Control means "controlling devices in the field, like opening and closing valves or turning on and off pumps"
Protocol A protocol is an agreed apon way of talking to each other. For example, normal protocol says that when you answer a phone, you say "Hello" first. If that wasn't established, you might just pick up the phone, not say anything and the person on the other end would be confused (try it, it works:)). So a protocol in my context means who the messages are sent from a valve to the computer.
